Are Your SUPPLEMENTS HARMING YOU?

supplements_not_safeSUPPLEMENTS are NOT SAFE! 23,000 people ended up in the ER last year because of supplements! So should you continue to take your supplements and how does this compare to prescription medications?? READ ON! IT GETS BETTER!
The study, was conducted by a team from the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration, tracking ER admissions at 63 hospitals throughout the United States from 2004 to 2013 and estimated that 23,000 were admitted for heart palpitations, chest pain, choking or other problems after ingesting dietary supplements mostly for weight loss, athletic or sexual performance or energy boosts. The effects are likely due to caffeine or herbal stimulants.

Besides those experiencing cardiac symptoms, the other likely group seen in emergency rooms was children who got into supplements like multivitamins that did not have a child safety lid. Older adults were usually admitted due to choking.

Let’s compare this to a study I found from last year from Harvard- which found that PROPERLY PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS caused 1.9 MILLION people to be sent to the ER annually! WOW! (that does NOT INCLUDE those admitted for misprescribing, overdosing, or self-prescribing)

Another 840,000 hospitalized patients were given drugs that caused serious adverse reactions for a total of 2.74 million serious adverse drug reactions. Most sad is that this resulted in approximately 128,000 people dying from drugs PROPERLY prescribed to them. This makes prescription drugs the 4th leading cause of death and has been this way for more than 20 years!

The European Commission estimates that adverse reactions from prescription drugs cause 200,000 deaths; so together, about 328,000 patients in the U.S. and Europe die from prescription drugs each year. The FDA does not acknowledge these facts and instead gathers a small fraction of the cases.

What the FDA and CDC did with this supplement review I feel was not justly represented. These supplements are not really “health” supplements as we know them. The are taken to drop weight, build muscle, sexually enhance or keep you buzzed and awake- not the typical approach for health and wellness. These supplements high in caffeine and other stimulants have well been suspect for cardiac symptoms and as a physician I DO NOT PRESCRIBE THEM and I DO recommend that they are all labeled with warnings so the consumer is aware.

With more than 50% of Americans (about 160 million of us!) consuming supplements daily and so few hospitalized because of them, it can be rest assured that the majority are safe. Also with about 170 million Americans taking a prescription drug, and many benefit from the drug and their lives are extended because of them. So it is up to us to educate ourselves about the safety of our medications and supplements and to ask our physician if there are not interactions.
